Driving Literacy Achievement
Overview
Mariposa County Unified School District (MCUSD) partnered with Glean Education to help support the district’s literacy improvement targets. The goal of this initiative was to build teacher knowledge of Structured Literacy, data-driven instructional practices, and intervention supports to raise district-wide student literacy achievement.
Background
In 2019, MCUSD received a grant for literacy professional development and chose Glean Eduction as their multi-year learning partner. MCUSD was set to receive their first in-person training March 2020 — the very week that the world shut down for covid. Our partnership paused only briefly to consider the ways in which the engagement may need to shift to account for the different instructional landscape. Within a few weeks, Glean launched our online courses to the team to support them with their new needs for delivering literacy instruction online. MCUSD received additional COVID grant funds to build a robust intervention team and Glean Education continued to tailor their work to the needs of the district and the shifting landscape. MCUSD’s ongoing partnership continues to shift as their needs change, but one thing always remains the same: student literacy growth is always the goal.
Details
From 2020 to present, MCUSD partnered with Glean Education to receive our monthly training in Structured Literacy topics to build teacher knowledge around research-based best practice. MCUSD school leaders received quarterly consulting support to help build school systems that support efficient Structured Literacy instruction and effective intervention. Additionally, all MCUSD educators engage in optional Structured Literacy Coaching to ensure the training transfers to classroom practice. In 2024, MCUSD partnered with Glean Education for a new avenue of support: online Structured Literacy intervention in MCUSD’s rural elementary schools.
Impact
MCUSD’s consulting, training, and coaching partnership with Glean Education has yielded significant positive outcomes. In five years, MCUSD has engaged over 98 hours of training and over 280 hours of coaching. 100% of learners in our trainings shared that they were satisfied with the scope and depth of the learning. We’ve seen significant growth in teacher’s confidence in delivering evidence-based instruction, tailoring instruction to student needs, analyzing data, and delivering targeted small-group instruction. Student literacy scores have begun to climb, especially among the most rural schools that have been the recent focus of our support.The partnership between MCUSD and Glean Education is a great example of the way impact can be built through customization and ongoing support when the common goal is student literacy success.
